Sound familiar?

If any of this is running through your head, you're in the right place.

I haven't lifted a weight in twenty years. I wouldn't know where to start.
My knee has been bothering me for so long I've just stopped doing things.
My doctor mentioned surgery and I'd really rather not.
I don't want to be the oldest person in a gym full of twenty-somethings.
I've joined a gym before. I went twice.
I'm worried I'll hurt myself and end up worse off than I started.
Every one of these is normal, and none of them disqualify you. You don't need to get in shape before you start. Your program begins at your current fitness level and progresses as you do.
What changes

This isn't about the mirror. It's about what you can still do.

Weight comes off along the way for most people. But the things clients bring up first are almost never about the scale.

  • Take the stairs without thinking about itLeg and hip strength usually comes back first, and stairs are where you notice it.
  • Get up off the floor on your ownPlaying with grandkids stops being something you have to plan an exit from.
  • Carry your own groceries, bags and grandkidsLoaded carries translate straight into daily life. One of the fastest wins.
  • Sleep better because you ache lessWhen the day's aches settle down, sleep follows. Clients bring this up constantly.
  • Walk into a gym knowing exactly what to doNo guessing, no wandering between machines. You'll know the plan before you arrive.
  • Get back to the thing you stopped doingGolf, hiking, tennis, travel, gardening. That's usually the real goal.
How it works

Three steps, and the first one is free.

1

Talk it through

A free, no-pressure conversation. Tell me what hurts, what you've already tried, and what you'd like to be able to do again. If I'm not the right fit, I'll say so.

2

Get assessed

We look at how you move, where you're limited, and what your starting strength actually is. Your plan is built from that, not from a template.

3

Start getting stronger

One hour with one coach — on a schedule that fits your week. We add weight as your body earns it and adjust the moment something stops feeling right.

The approach

Real weight training, scaled to the body you have today.

I'm not going to hand you three-pound dumbbells and a resistance band. You'll deadlift. You'll squat. You'll press and pull — because that's what builds the strength that holds a joint together and keeps you steady on your feet.

What changes is how:

  • Sore low back? Trap bar or elevated pulls instead of straight-bar deadlifts.
  • Cranky knees? Box squats to a depth that feels good, lowered over time.
  • Bad shoulder? Neutral-grip and landmine pressing before anything overhead.
  • Balance a concern? Supported single-leg work before we ever go unsupported.

A lot of what we're fixing is imbalance — one side doing the work the other side gave up on years ago. That's often where the pain is actually coming from, and it's why your program is yours alone, even in a session with someone else in the room.

Nothing we do should produce sharp pain. If it does, we change it that session — not next month.

In their words

What clients say

Every one of these came from someone who trains with me. Most of them started out nervous, and most of them started with something that hurt.

“Martin is the best! He always works towards my goals as an older guy. But, he also nudges me to push harder than I might when by myself. I highly recommend Martin!!!”
Billy B.
“I was a little (very) nervous at the thought of getting a trainer... let me tell you that it was one of the best decisions I have made. Not only am I extremely happy with where I am in my fitness journey, Martin also is an amazing life coach!”
Dale W.
“I have worked with Martin for over a year and he is amazing. Very patient when training and explains how to do each exercise, demonstrates each move, and cheers you on along the way. I actually look forward to my sessions and working out. I never thought I would say that. Gutz Fitness has pushed me beyond what I ever thought I could do in the gym!!”
Saundrea E.Training with Martin over a year
“Martin is amazing, always making sure form is perfect and a great motivator. Very knowledgeable and he gets results! Can't say enough great things about him.”
Deann C.
“Martin is fantastic — kind, understanding but realistic. During the initial session, he aligns your current fitness level with your aspired goals. Throughout your time with Martin, he makes himself available to answer questions to ensure progress. I was active before my two kids but slowly allowed life and my work lifestyle to reduce my activity levels. After almost four years, I am back to running and love the minor tweaks I've made that give me the energy to hold my toddlers longer and keep up with them.”

Meet your trainer

Hi, I'm Martin.

Growing up, I got picked on for my weight. That kind of thing gets into your head and stays there a while — it took a real bite out of my confidence.

Weight training during my time in the military changed that. Not just how I looked, but how I carried myself and who I ended up around. It gave me something to work on and a group of people to do it with. That's the thing I'm actually trying to hand to my clients.

These days most of the people I train are in their 50s, 60s and 70s. They come to me because something hurts, or because they've noticed they're not as steady as they used to be. What we build together isn't a physique — it's the strength to keep living the way they want to.

Gutz Fitness is about longevity through a healthy lifestyle, creating effective habits, and empowering people to take control of their life.

Questions people ask first

I have knee, back, or shoulder pain. Is it safe for me to lift weights?

For most people, yes — and done properly, strength training is one of the best things you can do for aching joints. The key word is properly. We start with a full movement assessment, work within the ranges that feel good, and build from there. Nothing we do should cause sharp pain.

If you're under a doctor's or physical therapist's care, bring me their guidance and I'll train around it. Personal training isn't medical treatment, and I'll tell you plainly if something is outside what I should be handling.

What does semi-personal training mean? Am I sharing my session with someone?

You'll train alongside one other client — two people, one coach, one hour. But you are not doing the same workout. Each person is on their own program, built around their own goals and their own muscle imbalances. I move between the two of you.

Most people find it easier than being alone with a trainer for an hour, and it keeps the price where it is. If a particular session needs to be just you and me, tell me at the consultation.

I'm really out of shape. Do I need to get in better shape before I start?

No. That's backwards, and it's the single most common reason people put this off for another year. Your program starts at your current fitness level, whatever that is, and progresses as you do. There's no baseline to hit before you're allowed to begin.

I'm 65. Am I going to be the oldest person there?

Almost certainly not. Most of my clients are between 50 and 70. Sessions are semi-personal — just you, one other client, and me — so there's no room full of strangers, and the person next to you very likely has the same knees you've got.

I've tried personal training before and it didn't stick. Why would this be different?

Usually because the program didn't account for what actually hurt, so it either got skipped or it made things worse. We start by finding the version of each movement your body can do today. It's a lot easier to keep showing up when nothing you're doing sets you back.

How long before I see results?

Generally about 8–12 weeks before you start to see results in the mirror, depending on where you're starting from and how often you train. Most people feel a difference well before that — stairs, getting out of a chair, and sleep usually improve first.

Do I have to do deadlifts and squats?

We'll do real strength training — deadlifts, squats, presses and rows — because that's what builds the strength that protects your joints. But we scale them to you: a trap bar instead of a straight bar, a box to squat to, a rack setting that shortens the range. The movement gets adapted to you, not the other way around.

How much does it cost?

Packages start with private 1-on-1, semi-private 2-on-1, hybrid, and fully online options. See the Pricing section for current rates, or inquire for availability. The first consultation is free.

How long is a session, and how often should I come?

Each session is one hour. Most clients train two or three times a week, but we'll work out the right frequency for you at the consultation — including a lighter schedule if that's what fits your life.

Do you provide meal plans?

I don't write meal plans, but nutrition is part of the coaching. You'll get daily and weekly calorie goals along with macros, plus practical advice on managing your diet in a way that fits your real life.

What if I need to cancel?

Just give 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. No-shows or cancellations without notice are charged as a full session. If you're running late, let me know — we'll still train, but the session ends at its scheduled time so the next client isn't pushed back.

Where do you train clients?

At 17721 Huffmeister Rd, Cypress, TX 77429, in the Cypress and Tomball area of northwest Houston.
